Heian Maru
Truk Lagoon, FSM

|
The Heian Maru was built in 1930, by Osaka Iron Works for the Nihon Yusen Kaisha Line (NYK) as a large passenger cargo liner. Her maiden voyage was from Hong Kong to Seattle. The Japanese Navy took control of her in 1941 for conversion to submarine tender. Weighing in at nearly 12,000 tons, she is the largest ship in the Truk Lagoon "Ghost Fleet". The Heian Maru was sunk on the second day of the "Hailstone" attack, by Avenger torpedo aircraft from the carrier Bunker Hill. A torpedo struck the engine room amidships and due to damage from earlier raids, the Heian Maru sank quickly. She now lies in 110 fsw. |
