Bosch PS40-2A 12 Volt Max Lithium-Ion Impact Driver

Product Description

The PS-40 Pocket Impact-driver is a small and lighter version of a cordless drill that is designed with a hammering function that spins fast, to produce about three times the torque of a drill. This means an impact driver will put in screws, bolts, and other fasteners much faster than a drill would.  It can drill holes, up to 1/2 inch and so handle just about any job a homeowner or contractor would do around the house. In size and feel, the Impactor is very much like the Pocket Driver. It's small and light enough to fit into a drawer. Hitched to your belt, you could carry it around all day and barely notice the weight, although it looks so cool, you're definitely going to want to keep taking it out. With the three LED lights on the front, Bosch has not only made sure this thing doubles practically as a spare flashlight, they've really solidified the space-age ray gun look, making the Impactor pretty hard not to pull it out just to play with. With the hammer action on top of the respectable 12 volts Max of power however, this can do even more than the Pocket Driver could. We used it to drive screws through sheet metal and 3/8-inch bolts into pine. It wasn't as fast as 14.4- or 18-volt models, but it got the job done well enough to make this a truly all-purpose tool.

What I really liked about the driver, was not only it's small light weight size, but the control it gave over the counter sinking of screw heads.  After over-driving hundreds of deck screws with a drill, I found the PS-40 to be a real pleasure on the arm and precise in set screw head depth.  Further, the speed of the bit is easily controlled with trigger pressure.   If you are looking for that all around tool for your tool shop, this is it.  Additionally, it uses the same batteries as the Bosch PS-50 Multi-X Vibrating Cutter/Sander.

Bosch PS50-2B 12-Volt Max Multi-X Carpenter Kit

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Pics are source links

The Bosch Multi-X Carpenter Kit, is a cordless version of the Fein Multi-Master.   It  too is a "Must Have" for every Do-it-Yourselfer and tradesman.  The capability to get in an trim materials easily in tight spaces is unmatched by any other tool I have ever used. Not only does it make precise cuts, but the danger of a spinning blade causing personal or material damage is minimized.  The advantage of a cordless version, makes it handy for many home repairs.  I found it especially handy for working around boats.  The only feature I found that was substandard, was the battery level indicator.  This press to test feature was hard to make display, so much so that I felt it was defective.  It did work, not as expected.  I also found it took several cycles to get a good life out of the batteries, but eventually they provided adequate power reserves for a cordless tool.

I cannot begin to quantify the effort and frustration this tool has saved me in correcting mistakes or performing an operation, no other tools will easily do.  The PS-50 takes the same battery as the PS-40 Pocket Impact-driver which gives you a little more "bang for the buck".

Bosch 1590EVSK 6.4 Amp Top Handle Jigsaw

This saw is much superior to my old Craftsman that died right in the middle of my cabinet project. It absorbs the cutting vibration, which greatly improves control and smoothly cuts around corners. The sawdust blower feature is a real plus, keeping your cutline clear.

Should you buy this saw I recommend you purchase the JA1003 saw guide and JA1005 Dust Pick up kit at the same time, as they are not included. The dust collector effective at getting most of the sawdust on the top of the stock, but not the bottom.  I also found that edge on 1 1/5" hose adapter will disconnect the dust collector if you are not attentive.   The only detractor I found was the saw guide could be more robust. However, it has held up so far.

The saw also contains a speed control mechanism: Set your maximum speed on the trigger dial, then control your speed up to that max by squeezing the trigger. On long cuts, you can lock the trigger on. Another great feature is the blade-change system that literally ejects the blade in a split second, takes the new one and gets you right back to your cutting.  Another nice accessory is the zero-clearance insert that also functions is an anti-shatter plate.  This works quite well in giving a smooth cut, but buy a couple of extras, as the clear plastic insert is only pressure fit into the saw foot and can easily be lost.

Overall I found this saw to be another exceptional Bosch product that provides superior performance.  I rate it as definite buy when it comes time to replace or add a jigsaw to your tool arsenal.  Online deals currently beat those of your local home center.

Bosch 5412L Sliding Miter Saw

This is one great saw. I bought a sliding miter saw on the recommendations of friends, instead of a radial arm saw. Despite my inclination for the larger cutting width of the DeWalt model, I was impressed with other owner's reviews. Based on these reviews and price value I went with the Bosch saw.

The saw is accurate right out of the box and changing the blade was not difficult as mentioned. You do have to ensure that the blade gets seated properly on the spindle, because it can slip a little and be secured incorrectly when adding the laser guide..

The dust port only catches minimal dust when hooked to a vacuum.  Tthe center of the neck of the saw is so wide that all the dust hits the neck and bounces all over. The area is so small it's not possible to get any adequate dust collector behind the blade. A "U" shaped dust collector that would catch the deflected saw dust would be of value.

Other improvements would be left and right side laser guide and more stop blocks on the fence. When small pieces don't reach the stop block on the fence, it's hard mount a clamped one due to the cast supports on the back of the fence. You can overcome this by sliding the top of the fence laterally to use the "flat area", but added on stop would be better.  Delivery from Amazon was very fast with a value price.

Clamps

Bessey / Gross Stabil Single/Double Spindle Edge Clamps Add-on

These clamps are a great "force multiplier" that adds to your clamping capability by increasing the versatility of the bar clamps you already own.  The clamps can be mounted anywhere on the bar to provide added clamping power on the edge or center of a project.  Available in single and double versions, these clamps are reasonably priced.  A "knock off" version by Gross Stabil is also available for even a cheaper price, but the quality has yet to be reviewed.

   Jet Joining Clamps

Case assembly of anything more than 3 pieces gets difficult real fast as you start to balance boards and clamps at the same time. Jet's Jointing Clamps add a completely new level of simplicity and speed to the process! These spring clamps grab and hold any thickness woods that can be slipped into them--up to 7/8" thick. No handles to mess with and no alignment worries.
  • The clamps slip on easily and hold tight, but still manage to allow minor tweaking before you screw or nail the case together.
  • Almost indestructible, the spring steel jaws are stainless and the composite block is fiber-filled plastic.
  • The clamps work on any length stock, and align right angle and T butt joints automatically.

These clamps work great and make assembling cabinet panels so much easier.  The spring clamps automatically hold your panels flush and has an index mark for interior panels and do not interfere with nail guns, etc.  No more trying to balance plywood panels while looking for a bar clamps or drill.  The clamps come in package of two (one left, one right).  They also come with two plastic shims????? of whose purpose not specified in the package or directions.  Since they are the same thickness as the clamp top, I believe they are a spacer to keep the panel level when resting on the clamp.

UPDATE: Although very useful, I cannot highly recommend this product, due to its lack of durability.  After only a few dozen cycles, on 3/4" plywood, the tops of the red clamps began to split either from material failure or lack of adequate reinforcement.  I notified Jet Tools of the problem and they sent me a couple of new sets, to replace the broken ones.  Hopefully they will redesign this product for long life.  Once the problems are corrected I would highly recommend these clamps.  In the interim, I will try to replace the broken plate with one made of plywood and see it the fault can be overcome.

Bessey Tools XV5-100 Vario Clippix Spring Clamp

If you have ever tried to use a spring clamp on a large piece of material, you are aware of the problems that can occur.  Restricted bite capacity, high squeeze pressure and the possibility the off square pressure may move pieces out of alignment.  Bessey has solved these problems with their variable capacity spring clamps that let you create an infinite range of jaw openings with constant, firm pressure at all openings. Top jaw slides easily with one hand and firmly grips on notched rail.  Soft pivoting pads to protect work surface and larger opening.

A clever variation on a spring clamp, the unique design of this variable capacity clamp lets you create an infinite range of openings up to 4", with constant, firm pressure at all openings. The top jaw slides easily with one hand, and it grips firmly on the notched rail to ensure a firm grip at all settings.
  • The variable opening also controls the pressure - for lighter pressure, click jaws wider than your work; for maximum pressure, click jaws down to a smaller opening.
  • The soft pivoting pads provide a firm grip on your work while remaining gentle on your work surfaces.
  • The large ergonomic handles are easy to operate at any and all openings with their non-slip inserts for a firm, safe grip.

I found these new clamps an improvement over the standard spring clamp, especially on securing extra wide project pieces.  They are a useful edition to any shop.

ELIMINATOR QUICK CHANGE ROUTER CHUCK

Everyone knows the frustration of trying to use multiple wrenches to loosen the chuck when changing a router bit.  Finally a solution has arrived.  The Eliminator Quick Change Chuck  simplifies the process of quickly changing bits with only the use of a 5/32" Allen wrench.     The chuck is easy to install and accepts both 1/2" and 1/4" or metric bits (with collet). I found this QC chuck to be a real pleasure to use, both on overhead, base and under mount routers.  This is one little accessory you'll be glad you bought.  Available for DeWalt, ELU, Festool, Fein, Freud and Porter Cable routers.

EZ Smart Saw/Router Guide & Table System

The Eurekazone EZ Guide System is the best saw guide I have ever used.   The guide's main advantage is that it prevents the wood shattering that often occurs on both sides of a sheet of plywood when cut.  The basic setup will easily cut up a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood.  The addition of the cross cut handle makes quick, accurate 90 degree cuts across a sheet from the factory edge.  The guide quickly lines up directly on your "cut" lines, avoiding the offsets of other saw guides and the easy to use clamps hold it securely.

The EZ Guide System is made of quality materials and can be expanded to cover many applications or specialized job requirements.  The add-ons include such items as a router guide, cabinet cutting gauge, and an entire cutting table.  The guide itself can even be used as a trimming table, when joined with the clamp upgrade option.   The basic saw plate comes with a guide, but custom base plates are are available for many circular saws currently on the market. The saw base plate comes with two inserts that will prevent wood shattering with the guide or reduce it when free sawing.  Check out their web sites for video demonstrations and setup of the guide. http://www.eurekazone.com/

Fein Multimaster

Although a little expensive, this tool is a "Must Have" for ever Do-it-Yourselfer and tradesman. The capability to get in an trim materials easily in tight spaces is unmatched by any other tool I have ever used. Not only does it make precise cuts, but the danger of a spinning blade causing personal or material damage is minimized.

I cannot begin to quantify the effort and frustration this tool has saved me in correcting mistakes or performing an operation, no other tools will easily do.

Kreg K3MS K3 Master Pocket Hole Jig System

The Kreg K3 Master Pocket Hole Jig is packed with loads of innovative new features.  The first of these new features is a three drill guide block that can now be used in two separate tool bodies.  Slide the block into the bench top base and drill pocket holes on your work bench, or remove the drill guide block and quickly place it into the smaller, portable base for use on the job site.  The face of the drill guide block now features a metal insert that will produce years of clean-cut pocket holes.  In addition, the bench top base features patent pending front side clamping that places the clamp handle on the same side or the work as your drill - No more reaching around the work piece to clamp.   The bench top base also accepts a snap-on dust collection shroud that can be easily connected to a shop-vac for chip free drilling!  The jig has built-in more height adjustment in the drill guide block,  to center a screw in material from ½ to 1-1/2 thick in 1/8 increments.  Another new addition to the K3 model is the Material Support Stop.  This innovative feature allows you to place pocket holes in exactly the same location on multiple work pieces for true production style pocket hole drilling.  The stop is hinged so it can be easily moved out of the way when drilling panels.

The jig works very well, has a lot of versatility and has been well thought out.  All standard measurement settings for the jig and bits are located on the jig frame. The addition of the vacuum attachment is a real pleasure for an often messy task.  With the addition of Kreg's specialty clamps, assembly with pocket screw technology will become your joining technique of choice.

Jet AFS-1000B Air Filtration System

The Jet Air Filtration System is an overheard mounted filter that catches an incredible amount of airborne dust particles.  It will clean and circulate the air in a 20 foot x 20 foot x 8 foot shop in under 5 minutes. It has three fan speeds, a remote control pad and an outer 5 micron disposable and inner 1 micron reusable filter.  An optional washable 5 micron filter is also available.

Tip: Add a 12" x 20" air conditioning filter in front of the  Jet AFS-1000B main filter.  These are easily obtained at any home center and are less expensive than always replacing the main filter.  Mounting clips can be home made or obtained at Rockler Hardware.

Gorilla Gripper

The Gorilla Gripper is the latest "gizmo" designed to solve the problem of moving large sheets of plywood and drywall.  Although it takes a little practice to master, the Gorilla Gripper does in fact make that job easier.  They have a good demo video on uses of the handle and an entertaining sales video as well.  Gorilla Gripper

Glu-Bot Glue Bottle

The Glu-Bot is the only glue bottle that will not drip or spill, while still putting the glue where you want it. Available in 16 and 4 oz. glue capacity containers, the easy-squeeze bottle features a unique two-chamber design that pulls the glue back after squeezing to eliminate dripping. This same design allows the Glu-Bot to be the first glue bottle to make vertical application easy and without drips.

  • Glue level remains high even when the bottle is running low.
  • Both bottles include blade and Yorker style precision tip and a centering bracket designed to keep your glue line centered on a board edge.
  • Tip kits include replacement lid and ring, five blade style tips, five Yorker style tips, and five replacement caps.

I really like this glue applicator as it eliminates the mess while always maintaining the glue supply when upright.  There is even an adapter to attach a standard glue roller tip, but no one seems to carry it????  The Glu-Bot is a handy addition to any shop.

GREX P635 23 Gauge  Headless Pinner

I chose the GREX P635 23 Gauge 1-3/8-Inch Length Headless Pinner based on recommendations of other users and it's greater capacity for variable pin size. So far it has functioned flawlessly in various density of wood and leaves no mars or obvious nail holes. The nailer's quality is obvious when you first handle it, as compared to my other nailers. I wish I had it when I trimmed my cabinets.

Grabit Screw Extractor

The Grabit Screw Extractor is the most effective damaged screw remover I have ever used. No longer do you have to drill out a screw as with conventional screw extractors.  This one piece tool does both operations easily.  I have even removed larger screws and bolts that the head had sheared off. (This did require drilling a conventional pilot hole).

Grabit 3 piece extractor kit works on damaged screws No. 4 - 14. Serrated edges for aggressive performance, quickly and easily removes most damaged screws such as Hex, Phillips, Torx, Square Drive; from wood, plastic or metal up to 3 inches in length. The two-step (flip style) drill bit and extractor in one tool can be used in a variable speed drill with regular or quick change chuck systems (use in reverse only when drilling and extracting with reversible hand held power drill). Serrated extracting end of tool results in greater torque for hard to remove screws. Good for multiple extractions with single tool.

Gunook Tool Hooks

      Sky Hook                      Super Hook

I saw these tool holders on the "Cool Tools" DIY show and thought they might make good Christmas presents.  They turned out better than I thought.  The Skyhook is great for hanging my battery powered drills from my belt.  The fact that it folds back out of the way, when not needed keeps you from getting caught on stuff around the shop.

The Super Hook turned out to be the perfect way to hang a nail gun "somewhere" while moving stock, etc.  It is big enough to hang over a ladder rung, or your tool belt.  One problem I had was once attached,  I could no longer store my nail gun in it's case.  Not to mention it would be expensive to add one of these to each of my pneumatic tools.  Here's my solution to both problems:

Tip:  Use a quick disconnect (QDC) fitting to attach the Super hook to any air tool you have that has a male fitting on it.  I have had no problems with inadvertent release of a tool, but it is possible.  This has turned out to be quite a handy modification.

DEWALT DC527 18 Volt NiCad Fluorescent Area Light

Dewalt has a series of light sources that utilize the same batteries that power their various cordless tools.  Since I had decided to use their 18volt systems years ago, I have a good supply of these batteries for use with extra tools and lights. Although I have a Dewalt flashlight and "snake light", I often find their illumination too narrow in larger spaces.   Dewalt has solved that with their new DC527 18 Volt NiCad Fluorescent Area Light.   The 13 watt fluorescent bulb lights up for a work area for hours on a single charge without getting warm and the "twist-and-lock" lens cover allows efficient and simple bulb changes. It’s light weight with a stable base and easy to hang from its pull-out hook. Leverage the use of your DEWALT 18 volt batteries to power this handy light place you need portable lighting.

Gear Wrench X-Pliers

Gear Wrench X-Pliers Double X™  Pliers jaws open greater distance than the handle for added reach in tight locations.  They are made of corrosion resistant Alloy Steel and feature maximum reach without exceeding center point of interference.  They have aligned serrated tips for precision gripping. Dual dipped grips enhance comfort and grip, and a flush rivet creates a narrow profile while adding strength to these pliers. These pliers are backed with a lifetime warranty.

Product Description
Features and Benefits

  • Compound joint allows access with minimal handle movement - Jaws open as wide as the handle
  • Flush rivet for strength and narrow profile
  • Dual dipped grips for comfort and grip
  • Aligned serrated tips for precision gripping
  • Corrosion resistant Alloy Steel
Although an improvement over normal pliers, I did find the opening spread on the handles bigger than I expected. Still I would definitely recommend these pliers for their usefulness in working those annoying tight spots.  Definitely a must for every tool box.

Starrett Hole Saw"OOPs"Arbor

I saw this little hole saw arbor and "just knew" I would need it one day. When that day came for re-cutting drywall holes for track lights, it was worth every penny. It made the larger hole clean and centered. Note: the directions on the package are poor and do not tell you replace the drill bit in the hole arbor with this arbor, in order to mount both saw diameters.

Now it’s as easy as 1-2-3 to enlarge a hole: 1) Place the original hole saw on the ''Oops'' arbor for use as a pilot; 2) put the larger hole saw on the original arbor and remove the center drill bit; 3) put the shank of the “Oops” arbor in place of the center drill bit.

  • Requires at least 3/16" difference in diameters between the two hole saws.
  • Fits A1, A2 and A10 hole saw arbors.
  • Measures 1-5/8" length x 3/4" dia. x 3/4".
  • Hardened steel.
  • Can be used with arbor #90301.

Little Wizard Metal Detector

This little hand-held metal detector can save you from costly damage to blades, planers, cutter heads, and jointers. by detecting metal objects in buried in wood.   It’s perfect for scanning recycled wood for hidden nails, screws, staples, etc.  The Little Wizard is lightweight, rugged, and easy to operate. Indicators include a speaker and LED red lights. To operate, simply adjust the dial on the Little Wizard until the tone signal stops, position and move in a circular motion. A continuous tone and light will let you know when you’re directly above any metal object. Requires one 9 volt battery.  I found it very effective in finding counter sunk screw hidden under a laminate surface.

Milwaukee 2420-22 12-Volt Hackzall Saw Kit

"Cool Tools" did it to me again on this one with their Christmas show.  Actually I have a pneumatic saw that is similar and I have found very useful in tight places,              but it does require a compressor.  Due to it's small size and portability, I immediately knew the Hackzall would be a handy addition to my tool box.  The saw is easy to control in all cutting situations and blade change is a breeze, requiring no tools.

Depending on the blade installed, the Hackzall will cut any material you might happed to need to cut. The saw kit comes with a spare battery, charger, blades and carrying case.  Unfortunately, there are four kinds of blades available and the kit only supplies two, so you'll need to purchase additional blades to cover all your needs.   I think Milwaukee has a winner with this handy cordless saw.  Editor's Note:  When I saw the Hackzall it appeared the battery might be compatible with my Bosch vibrating cutter and impact driver.  Alas, although they are basically the same battery pack, the manufacturers have made the cases proprietary so the batteries and chargers are not interchangeable.

Milwaukee's M12 Hackzall Recip Saw is the lead dog in the forward-thinking M12 LITHIUM-ION Cordless System from Milwaukee. This revolutionary tool dynamically saws with incredible precision and power, significantly surpassing its rivals. With an incredible range of applications, the M12 Hackzall lets you saw without strain in some of the tightest locations. The M12 Hackzall is 65% lighter and 35% shorter than other multipurpose saws, yet has the HEAVY-DUTY toughness and power you expect from Milwaukee.

The M12 Hackzall Recip Saw is smaller, lighter and more versatile than anything in its class. Weighing in at a mere 2.6 pounds and only 11" long, the M12 Hackzall enables precision cutting in the tightest, once-unreachable places.

Features, Benefits & Applications
Milwaukee has outdone itself again. The M12 Hackzall has a 1/2" stroke length for greater control in tight spaces, 0-3,000 SPM for fast cutting, sealed all-metal mechanism for increased durability and a unique built-in LED for illuminating cutting area. Compact, powerful and durable, it is the secret weapon behind precision cutting.

The M12 Hackzall features enable consistent one-handed operation, ideal performance through the toughest materials and extreme durability able to withstand jobsite use and abuse.

The Milwaukee M12 Hackzall is perfect for wood, metal, drywall, PVC rough out and finish, closet bolts, threaded rod sizing and trimming, insulation, EMT and Fiberglass.

Milwaukee LITHIUM-ION Battery
Milwaukee is the leader in LITHIUM-ION technology, launching the first Li-Ion System in 2005 and the first backward compatible Li-Ion in 2006. Perfecting the formula in 2008, Milwaukee's LITHIUM-ION batteries are 65% lighter, 50% smaller and store more than 30% more power than "compact" NiCd batteries. They also feature a Fuel Gauge that lets you know when to recharge, making it faster and easier to scope projects and decrease downtime.

To combat on-site problems like bent/broken terminals, damaged clips and broken welds caused by use and abuse, Milwaukee LITHIUM-ION batteries are equipped with recessed terminals, slide pack dual clips and over-molded housing, and integrated welded frame and cell separators.

Technical Details

  • 12V LITHIUM-ION battery offers longer run-time and fade-free performance
  • Keyless QUIK-LOK Blade Clamp allows for quick and easy blade changes and All-metal gear case for added durability
  • Variable speed trigger for increased user control
  • Battery fuel gauge displays remaining run-time and Built-In LED light illuminates work surface

Ryobi 18V One+ Orbital Jig Saw P521

"Murphy's Law" was a live and well when my old Craftsman jig saw died right in the middle of making a cut for my cabinet project.  Covered with saw dust I ran down to the local home center to buy a replacement.  Unfortunately the price of the saw I wanted was substantially more than could be found on the internet.  I didn't want to buy a cheap saw I'd never use again, so I started to look for a cordless one that would compliment my tool arsenal.  My first thought was for a Dewalt to match my battery setup, but naturally they didn't carry them.  Next I found the Ryobi P521 and when I saw the $45.00 price I thought YES!!!!.  However, I soon found that price was without batteries or charger (of course it takes one different from Dewalt).  A quick assessment of these showed the saw, a couple of batteries and a charger were going to run about $120.00, still cheaper than the Dewalt versions.  SOLD!

I found this saw to be powerful and easy to handle.  The laser guide is very accurate for long cuts and the anti-shatter foot makes clean cuts on plywood.  In fact the only thing I found objectionable was the safety guide obscures your cut line and can make you "wander" the blade at the end of a cut as the laser disappears.  Knowing this though eliminates the problem.  Also of note is the saw will accept the old style square type saw blades (I have a lot of) as well the current "bayonet" type and the saw/charger will handle standard and lithium batteries.  Overall this a great little jig saw and one that will handle most home improvement projects.  The Ryobi line of cordless tools are value priced and if comparable to quality and performance as this saw are worthy of consideration for any shop.

Ryobi 1-1/2Hp Router/Router Table Combo Kit

Great price for a terrific little turnkey 1/4" bit router with aluminum table.  Very handy for making multiple trim strips on both sides of a plank.  Route and then cutting them off at the saw, then  route another pair on the remaining stock.

Port-a-Cool

 Port-a-Cool (front)    Port-a-Cool (rear)

My shop is located in the SE part of the country so heat and humidity are a real problem, especially when working outdoors.

While looking for a solution, I started to wonder if the "swamp coolers" I saw on the side lines at football games might be the ticket.  I was skeptical, due to the fact that the inherent high humidity would diminish the evaporative cooling that enables these devices to work.  Still I saw these things everywhere, so I was interested.  After a little research  I found that the current models overcome a lot of the evaporative cooling/humidity issue via modern design.

My hopes were dashed when I started pricing these coolers, BIG BUCKS!  I could install a separate AC system for the same price.    Then by "divine intervention", I saw a portable version, when I walked into my local NAPA store.  The salesman told me the way they market these coolers, is to drop them off at local garages during the day and then pick them up after it gets hot.  Once people see the difference they make, they're sold.  I was sold too when I got a great deal on the end of season model.

I'm impressed with the Port-a-Cool.  Temps have only been in the 80's with low humidity, but the cooling is noticeable.  The fan is big enough to make a "breeze" even sitting on the driveway.  It's easy to move around can be used during any outdoor activity. So far this has been a great and cost effective cooling solution.

Tip:  Add ice to the reservoir for even greater cooling effect.

Porter-Cable 371K 2 1/2 by 14-Inch Compact Belt Sander Kit

This portable, compact belt Sander from Porter-Cable is shaped like an armadillo with an arched back and a rubber grip for one-handed operation. The sander is so light weight and balanced, no matter how you hold it, you are directing force at the center of the platen for more comfortable, precise control. The Porter-Cable 371K Compact Belt Sander Kit belt sander won the 2006 Handy Magazine Innovation Award due to its great style, ease of use, and all-around great craftsmanship.

I first used this sander to strip a door for refinishing.  The sander was very easy to handle in tight spaces, did a great job sanding, and had effective dust collection.  The only thing unusual I found was the fact the sander did get hot after extended use.  Not a big deal with a glove on, but noticeable.

The 371K comes with helpful features, including a removable dust port,  a 5 amp, 500 MWO motor for real power clearing hardwoods, a flush side that lets you sand right up against perpendicular surfaces, and a recessed/dust sealed switch that is easy to access but minimizes accidental turn-offs. The removable auxiliary handle gives you exceptional control when you need two hands. The 371K is well made with a hardy plastic housing over metal components that are made to stand up to heavy use.  This kit comes with an 80-grit sanding belt (2-1/2 by 14-inch) and a carrying case for easy transport to the job site or the workshop.

Applications
Ideal for broad, general workshop purposes, this belt sander smoothes and levels solid wood and veneered sheet goods, sands cabinet face frames, prepares edge-glued solid panels after clamping, and does a fine job of removing lots of stock quickly.

Porter Cable 324MAG 7 1/4 inch 15 amp Circular Saw

My old Sears circular saw had a base too small to fit on my new EZ Fence saw guide, so I started looking for another one that had an integrated saw dust collection system, blade brake, and laser guide.  I only found three saws on the market, Sears, Festool, and Porter Cable even had a dust collection system  The Sears version had a laser included, but I figured unnecessary with the guide.  It also looked a little "cheap".  The Festool was nice, but too expensive.  Based on internet recommendations I decided on the  Porter Cable 324MAG 7 1/4 inch 15 AMP circular saw.

The saw is nice and light, cutting through 3/4" plywood effortlessly with a new blade.  The tool free blade change makes blade changes a snap, but requires a little practice.

The saw dust collection nozzle, interestingly, is on the front of the saw.  I suppose this helps capture more dust as the blade is forcing the saw dust up the nozzle as it rotates.  The position does take some getting used to, as you have to curve the dust hose around the saw to keep it clear of the cut.  You can leave the hose leading out ahead of the saw, but you have to stay more alert to it's position.  The dust collector does seem to catch most of the dust, as I had less than one dust pan full after cutting up two full sheets of 3/4" plywood.

One of things I noticed in other user reviews, was that tool free blade nut would loosen up allowing the blade to wobble.  After a couple months of use I also experienced this problem and no amount of re-tightening solved the problem.  This is obviously a design flaw that Porter Cable has recognized. When I contacted them about it the saw retaining nut loosening, they immediately sent me out a conventional blade nut and wrench kit (648112-00), supplied with most saws.  Unfortunately, the bolt (which cannot be ordered separately) was thread cutting type???  I was afraid would this would damage the saws threads, when it would not thread easily, so they sent me a second kit.  This one worked fine and the problem was solved.  (Editor's Note:  While awaiting the new bolt I substituted a 8MM x 1.00 bolt and washer which also worked well.  This is an extremely difficult size to find, but Ace Hardware came through.  I was unable to find the same thread size in a washer head bolt anywhere on the internet, but I did find a Tap and die at Tools-Plus).

Overall I am very pleased with this saw.  It works quite well with my saw guide and makes nice cuts in heavy material effortlessly. If later models do not come with a conventional  blade retaining nut and washer, get one from Porter Cable while your saw is still under warranty. Eventually you'll need it.  Note: EZ Guide now has a saw base specifically for this saw.

Tip:  If you are using an extension chord with your saw and/or running a vacuum on the same circuit, your saw may perform poorly.  Before changing the blade, check the owner's manual for recommendations on extension chord size, length and circuit size.  Lack of "juice" not a dull blade may be the problem.

Shopsmith Mark 500        Shopsmith Mark 520

I've been a Shopsmith owner for over twenty years and I love this machine.  It gives the most "bang for the buck" and is great when workshop space is at a premium.  Best of all it's the "gift that keeps on giving" as there is always an accessory or attachment you'll want to add.  Later you can add individual power stands if you want to split the accessory tools up.  I originally bought the 500 model which was the only model at the time.  Later when the 520 model came out, I resisted upgrading as some of my 500 add-ons were not compatible.  Last year I finally gave in an went with the 520 upgrade.  It was well worth the cost and I wish I had done it sooner.  If you have a choice go with the 520 model initially.

PROS: Built to last with a proven track record.   Good product support.   Compact foot print that saves space.  Incredibly versatile.  Can often perform two operations simultaneously such as ripping and jointing.

CONS: The machine's only real weakness lies in the fact the saw table, not the saw blade tilts for beveled cuts.  This can be awkward, especially when trying to miter large pieces of wood.  You are limited to a length of about three feet (as the board hits the floor) and may have to make a jig to support large pieces.  (I have often given up and used my circular saw  in these cases)

It takes some experience to plan your projects construction steps to avoid constantly re-configuring the machine, especially from horizontal to vertical modes. A little practice will make this a non-problem.

Tip: #1 Get on the owner's email list and make a "Wish List" on accessories you would like to add.  Shopsmith is always running sales on catalog items, so you can save a lot of cash.

Tip: #2  Check out the Shopsmith Online Academy Saw Dust Session/Archives.   Nick Engler does great videos on wood working techniques, jigs and Shopsmith maintenance.  Many of his ideas are universal to wood workers who use power tools other than the Shopsmith.

Shopsmith DC 3300 Dust Collector

I'm very pleased with this dust collector and have very little saw dust clean up than from before.  The 24" hood is recommended and I'm am very pleased with the results. I will be adding the 42" hood soon as I incorporate this collector into my whole shop system. This is supposed to reduce the fine dust down to 1 micron.  Stay tuned for an update!

PROS: Light weight, low noise and easy to move.  The multiple intakes allows for use on multiple tools at the same time.  The foot switch is very handy while sawing.

CONS: Be careful not to rip the bag since it is exposed.  Some fine dust will get through the filter hood.

Tip: Most Home Supply stores sell 2.5" attachments for the hoses.  Connectors are very handy for connecting several sections of hose together, instead of moving the collector between machines.  A nozzle allows use a standard vacuum for general clean up of other saw dust.

Tip 2: The Base of the DC 3300 is held together with bolts that protrude through the base and can rip the plastic bag.  Put some vinyl screw tip covers or 3/4" long pieces of hose on them (available at your local home supply store).

Tip 3:  If your sawdust bag gets ripped while moving around, "armor" it with some flexible plastic sheeting.  I used an old lawn bag skeleton, but if you can't find that cut the bottom out of an appropriate sized plastic garbage can. (The remaining cylinder is 25.5" high.)  Slice the can vertically so the plastic can be spread and removed from around the bag when its full.  The dust collector base will show you the correct diameter and will contain your cylinder when installed.

Saw Blades

Freud LU79R010 10" Diameter x 80T Hi-ATB Thin Kerf Ultimate Plywood & Melamine Carbide Tipped Saw Blade with 5/8" Arbor (.098 Kerf)

I was frustrated with how fast my steel plywood blades were wearing out cutting plywood, on a Shopsmith 520, so after reading several reviews I decided to give this blade a try. Although a little expensive, I agree with the other reviewers that this is one great blade. It produces clean, low shatter cuts in cabinet plywood. I did experience some burning on the fence side of the blade, but after several cuts it went a way. So far this blade has exceeded the life of several steel blades and so far has been more cost effective over the long haul.

Craftsman Professional Laser Trac™ 10 in. Radial Arm Saw  model# 22010

This Craftsman tool was a major disappointment. In fact you could make better cuts with a pocket knife. The saw had to be set more than three degrees off square in both the X & Y axis to get a square cut. Unfortunately, this causes "cove" cuts in the Y axis.  Further, the saw had no repeatability when the power head was moved for 45 degree miter cuts, etc. Move the blade or release a set lock and you have to re-align the saw. The laser cut line is almost two blade widths away from the actual saw kerf and so is worthless.

Despite two visits from Sears technicians and a blade change the saw could not be made to work even passably. Based on a Sears technician's comments, this model of saw is defective and other customers have returned them.  Sears took the saw back without question, but in view of the cost they are incurring with warranty calls, they should just produce another saw that lives up to the Craftsman name.

PROS: Nice features and price.

CONS: Unreliable and not suitable for anything but rough carpentry.

TROJAN TS-35 SAWHORSE LEGS

The Trojans TWC-35 portable sawhorse legs are some of the best I have ever used. They are sturdy and quickly set up to give a firm work platform that resists shifting when sliding a 3/4" sheet of plywood on top during one man operations. Due to the way they utilize standard lumber cross pieces, they are perfect for setting up a plywood cutting table/jig that will end your worries about cutting into your sawhorse or ruining a blade. Frankly "busting up" sheets of plywood has never been easier. They are very stable and would be excellent in any operation that requires sawhorses. Also these versatile legs fold up for compact storage. Although a little costly, with care they will last you forever and are covered by a lifetime guarantee from the manufacturer.

(My plywood cutting table at work.)

The Trojan's TWC-35 sawhorse legs are the 35-inch sawhorse leg sections for use with 2" x 4" or 2" x 6" lumber. They feature press gripping teeth and require no screws or nails for set-up. Constructed of 1/8 inch thick welded steel, they will self-level to any terrain.

Two Speed 8" Bench Grinder & Stand

Pics are source links

As a "force multiplier", this one can do it all! There's no longer a reason to own two grinders to sharpen tools and do general grinding work. This revolutionary 2/3 HP grinder runs at a slow 1720 RPM for sharpening your precision woodworking tools. With a flick of a switch it transforms into a heavy duty 3450 RPM bench grinder. Now you can sharpen your carving or turning tools and the lawn mower blades on the same grinder!

  • Grinding wheel hole is 7/8" with a bushing to reduce it to the 5/8" arbor.
  • Includes one 60 grit gray wheel and one 120 grit white aluminum oxide grinding wheel, tool rests, and spark/chip deflector shields.

The grinder is built well and has enough torque to grind away heavy steal, without slowing down.  The grinder requires some assembly of attachments and it is possible to mis-install the incorrect length bolts for the tool rests (the short ones hold the "L"-bracket otherwise the long ones will jam the wheels).  Unfortunately the grinder does not come with a water reservoir to cooling steel, but this is easily added.  Also the addition of a work light would be useful.

I mounted the grinder on the Woodcraft Multi Purpose Stand.  The stand is bolted together and is made of stamped steel parts that are robust enough to establish a firm base.  This is a quality stand at a reasonable price.  The cross supports will easily support a homemade wood shelf.

Overall Woodcraft's Two Speed Grinder is a value priced addition to any shop.

V-Clamp Vacuum Clamps

Clamp parts from the bottom side so you can rout, sand, saw or carve with no obstructions on the face of your work piece . These little industrial- strength workhorses use a tiny amount of compressed air to generate a huge amount of clamping force, up to 330 pounds. Works great vertically for edge work, or horizontally for surface work. There are no moving parts, meaning they’ll provide years of trouble-free service. Made from lightweight, durable injection-molded nylon. Includes 4 mounting tabs so it can be bolted to the work surface. Each clamp includes a 40" length of transparent air supply line, two 22" rubber seals, and two Quick-Fit connectors.

Accessories also available: use the Tee Connector to string several clamps together for large pieces! Tall Seal is slightly taller and softer for use with rough lumber and gently curving surfaces. On/Off Valve allows you to turn the vacuum on and off, and provides the perfect conversion to a standard air line. 6-1/4" square.

V-Clamps are designed to hold non-porous objects using compressed air. Simply connect it to your compressed air supply. Ideal for objects with at least one relatively flat face, but slightly curved items such as guitars and violins work very well. Rough sawn timbers can also be clamped. There are no moving parts inside the clamps, so the only thing that can wear out is the replaceable rubber seal. Use 6mm (1/4") pressure hose to string multiple clamps together from one air supply - great for large tabletops!

Single-Sided V-Clamp

  • Measures 6-1/4" x 6-1/4" x 7/8".
  • Seal Channels have 1-7/8" spacing.
  • Includes four 1/4" Fixing holes.
  • Max Holding force with full face - 150kg (330lbs).
  • Air Consumption at 80psi - 26 litres/min, 1cfm.
  • Max supply pressure - 800kPa, 115psi.
  • Vacuum generated at 800kpa, 115psi - -88kpa, -12.5psi, 26" Hg.

I found the V-Clamp to work as advertised and provided tremendous clamping power. It is perfect for holding items for routing and eliminates the need for conventional clamps that get in the way while such operations. The quick release feature via, the valve makes for quick material changes.

The clamp does require a little practice to route the seal to hold smaller items, but I used it to hold a section of 2" x 4" to rout a rabbet.

I recommend you view their website for clamping ideas. The clamps can be used in many configurations IE: tandem (Requires T connector) to clamp large items or vertical to hold an item for assembly. They do not recommend it for hold MDF, but I got good results on my masonite bench top. The clamp does require a continuous supply of air, but I had no problems with a medium size compressor that ran only occasionally. It is available in single sided (bolt on version) and a double sided vacuum self attaching version.

For examples of how I used the V-clamp system around the shop check out Shop Tips.

Wixey Digital Planer Gauge

If you have ever tried precision planning, you know how difficult it is.  This is especially true if you have to later go back and mill more stock after you have moved the planer's height setting.  The Wixey Digital Planer Gauge has made precision planing possible at an economical cost.  This simple digital gauge is designed for use on moving table height planers and is flexible enough to adapt to various models (see Shopsmith Thickness Planer Installation).  The kit comes with instructions and parts for several planers currently on the market and can be adapted for your personal needs if necessary (see other model installations).  The gauge can either be attached to your planer with the supplied mounting tape or permanently mounted with screws.  A drill bit and self tapping screws are included.  So far the accuracy and repeatability of this little gauge has been outstanding.  If you are wondering if that 1/4 turn of the table height knob was really 1/16", this is a shop must have.  I suspect with a little imagination this gauge could also be adapted for digital drilling.

(Editor's Note: If you are installing the Wixey Digital Planer Gauge on a planer not covered in the directions, I recommend you assemble the entire gauge first to see where all the "Murphys" are.  I followed the instructions step by step and just got lucky the holes I drilled did not require an offset for the lift bracket.)

Product Description
No more twisting and bending to see the display. The LCD display has been rotated and angled upward to greatly improve the readability. Measuring stock up to 6" thick, the gauge displays the thickness of the wood coming out of the planer to plus or minus 0.0025" accuracy. The large display reads in inches with fractions or in millimeters and you can make absolute and incremental measurements. The fractions are displayed using Precise Fraction Technology which provides 4 times the accuracy of other fractional readouts. Constant memory retains calibration even when turned OFF. Simple mounting brackets allow you to mount on many planers without drilling any holes. Spare battery included.

Shopsmith Thickness Planer Installation

Most bench planers on the market today are much taller than the Shopsmith Power Planer.  This is not a problem for the Wixey Digital Planer Gauge, but it does mean the gauge will extend past the top of the planer (watch those 2" x 4"s your swinging around the shop).  Since the directions supplied with the gauge did not include mounting instructions for a Shopsmith Power Planer, I had to come up with my own set up.  After looking at my mounting options I decided I would rather permanently mount the gauge, rather than using the mounting tape method.  This would ensure better accuracy and allow for removal of the gauge with repeatability. It appeared that I could take advantage of several of the Shopsmith Power Planer's currently tapped holes to do this and minimize any damage to the planer's casting.

Shopsmith installed screws

I disassemble the Wixey Digital Planer Gauge, by unhooking the spring in the back and sliding the scale and display out of the rear bracket.  Then I removed all the screws in the sheet metal planer cover and rotated it out of the way.  This way it will not be  necessary to remove the table height adjusting handle.  Next I drew two lines through the mounting holes I intended to use and set the bracket height per the gauge's instructions. The edge of the planer case is wider than the rear of the gauge bracket, so the marked lines are visible for transfer to the bracket.   Now with the proper height set I drilled two holes in the center of each line on the rear bracket. (Note: The thickness of the homemade lift bracket you make, may require these holes to be offset towards the left side of the rear bracket.)

Tapped Shopsmith Holes Mounted rear Wixey gauge bracket

Next I needed to mark the location of the pre-drilled hole in the bracket and drill a hole in the planer casing for the lower attachment screw. A metric drill bit and self-tapping screw are supplied with the kit. Since the Shopsmith planer's upper cover extends over the side casting, I decided to use the old index gauge as a shim to take up the space.  This works fine, but requires you drill a hole through the index also.  Just mount the Wixey rear bracket on the planer with the upper screws and use the bracket as a jig to mark and drill the lower hole through index and casting simultaneously.  Hindsight being 20/20 I suppose you could have extended the Wixey rear bracket to take advantage of  the Shopsmith Power Planer's lower index mounting screw as the lower attachment point.  This would require attaching a piece of bar stock to the back of the Wixey rear bracket via welding, tapping, riveting, etc.  The extension would become the shim instead of the planer's index plate.  More holes in the bracket, none in the planer.

The supplied lift brackets for the gauge will not work on the Shopsmith, so you will have to make your own.  The bracket connects the planer's adjustable table (at point of the old index arrow) to the Wixey digital readout.  I used a piece of scrap door seal aluminum, which was perfect in width and had a small right angle lip to add rigidity.  However any small piece of aluminum or steel bar stock will do. (See Note Above)   Normally the Wixey gauge is designed to calibrate the digital readout via the top attachment screw and elongated hole bracket, but my piece of scrap already had hole drilled in it that was in the correct spot for the lower attachment screw.  I elongated the lower hole instead. This end of the bracket attaches to the planer table with the screw that previously held the planer's index arrow.

Homemade bracket upper screw Homemade bracket elongated lower hole

Installed lift bracket viewed from right  Installed Wixey Digital Planer Gauge

Total installation time is about an hour with this installation.  When complete calibrate the readout per the instructions and plane away.   If you intend to leave the gauge on in storage the Shopsmith tool cover will have to be modified to account for the extended height.

The best price I found on the Wixey Digital Planer is available at Amazon.com.

TOOL BAND-IT  MAGNETIC TOOL HOLDER

One of the problems of working up on a ladder, is you have no place to set the small tools and fasteners were you can retrieve them.  The Tool Band-It is a handy solution to this problem.  Just velcro it on your arm and the those small tools and fasteners go where ever you do.  While installing a ceiling fan I found this gizmo lived up to its expectations.  I had all the tools I needed and I wasn't dropping screws off the top of the ladder.  I also found it handy while working under the car.  The Tool Band-It kept my sockets from rolling around the driveway.  Save yourself some aggravation and get yourself a  Tool Band-It.

Description: Tool Band-It is a rugged, flexible, lightweight, magnetic armband that keeps your tools and work pieces within reach. Powerful, Rare Earth Magnets securely hold everything from nails to hammers. A "must have" when working in confined spaces like the attic, crawl spaces or under vehicles. Covered with PVC polyknit fabric, just wrap this magnetic band around your arm, as one size fits most adults.  Tools have never been so handy.

Wood River Bench Mortiser and Chisels

                                Pics are source links

Woodcraft has brought back the  Steel City Mortiser as the Wood River Brand. The design is obviously identical and so one would assume the quality and function would comparable.  I originally bought  the Steel City version through Woodcraft after much comparison of the different models and features.  Based on the features and price Steel City was the way to go and did not disappoint.

The first time I used the machine to cut a mortise, I was amazed at how effortless the entire process was in comparison to the mortiser attachment on my Shopsmith.  It cut through the hardwood I was using "like butter".  The motor was quiet, the plunge action smooth and the adjustments easy.  If fact my only complaint was the location of the set screw on the hold down, which was difficult to reach.  I don't know if I got a different version or a defective hold down as the manual showed the set screw located at the front, between the arms.  This was is the best location so I drilled and tapped a set screw hole myself.   They seem to have corrected this problem on the new version.

These bench top tools are quite heavy and so not something you want to lift up a lot for use.  They also require mounting on the edge of your bench to allow for end mortising.  Additionally due to the torque required to make a mortise, the mount and bench must be quite sturdy.  I mounted mine via my T-slot insert with threaded inserts in the bench top, at the rear.  Normally I just loosen the T-screws and slide the mortiser out of the way, when not needed.  If you do a lot of joinery a mortiser is a must and ease of operation will improve your accuracy and project satisfaction.

Woodpecker QuickLift 420 Router Lift

The Woodpecker Quick Lift 420 is a great solid removable router plate insert.  The lift allows for easy change out of your router motor for other use or storage.  These lift plate allows for the installation of various diameter center opening twist lock plate inserts to accommodate various bit sizes.

The lift allows for easy bit changes by removing the twist lock plate insert and then using the silver "L" handle to raise up the router allowing easy access to the chuck.  The addition of an Eliminator Quick Change Chuck makes the job even easier.  Once set up the venier handle makes for quick and precise setting of the router bit height.

I chose to install my router plate in a Shopsmith Router table mounted on a Shopsmith 520 machine.  Although the router plate is a standard size and the table was designed for Woodpecker's basic plate, some minor fitting was required.   The system makes for an excellent routing platform and reduces the needed storage area of a conventional router table.  The fact that router motor removal is so easy, means you can quickly move your router to another base is a real plus.  Additionally you no longer need to tie up one of your router bases, by screwing into a insert plate of other models.
